On the 50^th Countdown Day (Sunday 11 Oct) before we get ‘Together 当我们同在一起’, the star to highlight is 黄俊雄Elvin Ng – three-time recipient of the Star Awards Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste award.

When I was selecting photos of Elvin Ng as ‘泰山’ from those taken during the filming of this drama, it was an easy job for me when Elvin is concerned. Every single photo of Elvin looks good. Elvin went on a proper diet to get that look to fit into the role. His well-chiseled face is every photographer’s dream photo in the making. He has also toned his body just about right – not too muscular or soft. On screen, Elvin looks every bit a leading male star.

I know some of you may have an issue with his acting skills. Some felt his performance in ‘The Ultimatum’ was overly-exaggerated. Let me tell you this: Elvin doesn’t just brush that aside and pretend the issue wasn’t there. He once told me frankly at the imaging session of ‘Together 当我们同在一起’ that he felt he was a bit ‘slow’ – as in 开窍 or 领悟 in the art of acting and he is working hard on it…

Elvin knows it and is determined to improve. This guy is a real down-to-earth humble fellow who wants to perfect his skills.

My Promo Editor commented earlier on that he was worried about not finding impressive scenes of Elvin to craft good promo trailers. But he was pleasantly surprised that Elvin managed to emote well in quite a fair bit of scenes in this new show unlike his previous dramas. Elvin has what it takes to be a star. He just needs the right environment, time and your support to blossom.

陈汉玮 Chen Han Wei and 李南星 Li Nan Xing aren’t what they are today if you look back at their initial years of their acting career.

Nan Xing even commented in an interview before that Han Wei didn’t know much about acting in those years when he acted opposite him but evolved into a totally brilliant actor today.

There’s no 速成班 when it comes to acting. Some may take a longer time to evolve into a great actor…

Otherwise, you will be watching a lot of dramas about the aged population or old wrinkled artistes playing ‘younger-than-their-actual-age’ roles…ha-ha…

   I think Elvin has the looks but not the skills. Elvin’s acting skill is still not on par with newcomer DYT. I really hope he will improve in this series. DYT may not graps the skill of showing his emotions through his expressions however I feel his emotions are well recieve by the way he deliver his lines. His acting skills are great for one with little experience. Jeanetter loos younger than her leading man in this however she fits the character perfectly. I was wondering if you can do another more detailed character profile as I felt that the previous one is not detailed enough. I heard JA and DYT will have a son in this. Who will play that character ?

   Hi Paul,

   i agree that Elvin can be a great actor if he is given more exposure and support from the viewers. Nanxing, Hanwei, Ping Hui came far like this too.

   I used to think that Elvin is the star who is pretty good-looking but is very very poor in his acting. But now, I feel that not only is he pretty good-looking but also, he can act. The preview was simply an eye-opener for me because he has improved. An significant improvement. Dai Yang Tian, on the other hand has disappointed me quite a bit. Maybe because he was too pressurized by the role given to him. A role like “Yue Niang” is really hard to come by and if that artiste shines in it like Jeanette Aw, that artiste is going to make it B-I-G! I was very happy that he was chosen at first but having seen the first long trailer for “Together”, I wish Qi Yu Wu was the one chosen. Jeanette Aw has also improved quite a bit in handling her emotions. She is getting better and better. Any objections, fellow people? Kola Zhou is quite impressive for a new-comer and I think she might just win the Best New-Comer Award next April. Zhang Zhen Huan failed with his attempt the to “Ah Gua” thing. Xie Shao Guang could have did it ten times better, not mentioning that he is a veteran in acting. No comments for Eelyn Kok because mad fans of her come barking at me for no reason again. I was just stating facts about in one of the posts before this but her fans just could not take it. Maybe they would like to stop fuming deep in and vote for her into the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes. She is not in my list and I don’t think she will be in many people’s list. To the fellow who has been barking non-stop, you had better bring her in if she happens to be nominated or just get ready to be mocked at.

    I feel that currently, Elvin has the look (he looks really great on photos), but lacked acting skills.

    I know that he is trying very hard on it, but perhaps he uses the wrong method or going in the wrong direction? Maybe he need someone to enlighten him? Maybe can get some veteran actors to teach him?

    This is only his 4th year in the industry and he is only 29. Give him more chance or more guidance. Hope to see a better performance of him in Together.

    Paul, you’ll have difficulty converting the stubborn and old viewer like Callista.

    Young viewers are more forgiving and give more encouragement to newcomers.

    @nobody: I saw that video before and I think that person is pretty insulting. He/She definitely hates Singapore a lot. He/She was the one who subbed Ris Low’s interview with all the funny words which I wouldn’t have noticed if not for the subs.

    Like what Paul said, small case lah. There are many more people out there who are anticipating ‘Together’

    I do not think Elvin is humble or down to earth. He doesn’t accept negative comments on his blog. Even a tiny negative but encouraging comment of him to improve his acting – he didn’t accept it. He brush the comments aside. No wonder he didn’t improve all these years. He needs to be more humble and work on his acting. If a person is humble, he will definitely accept every comments on his blog. I doubt what you said.

    Wow Mediacorp is trying so hard to promote the Anniversary Series! Even starting a 100 days before it. Is the show really that bad that it needs an abundance of promotion campaigns and trailers in order to draw audiences in?

    Hi i agree with paul that elvin is very down-to-earth. he really is! and he is really very serious about his job as an actor, otherwise he would not have been so bothered by all the negative comments. he has really been trying very very very hard. let’s all give him some space please! i remember when xie shaoguang started out, he was nothing much also. and chen hanwei wasn’t good too. li nanxing first few shows also quite lousy, his acting. they all took years of experience and practice to make it good. please give him more space!

    one more thing i wan to say is jeanette’s talking improve also! very good now not so xin ku to listen to her already. she really very good now! wah!

    looking forward to de show! dyt looks good also, but not as good as elvin. god! i really really really like elvin!

    Acting, just like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. What someone might label as good acting may seem horrible to another, like who someone labels as handsome may look repulsive to others. This is the only thing I can concluded from reading all the various viewpoints of who are good actors on this blog.

    I think the reason why JA slapped DYT might be because DYT was opposing her to become a bargirl, and JA is furious that he doesn’t understand what she’s going through? Then DYT is angry that JA doesn’t listen to him, so he slaps her to invoke some sense in her?

    haha… not enough money can ask Zhang Zhen Huan to be an ‘Ah Gua’ (like in the show) to entertain him…

    That scene was classic… Even if their slaps were real, its worth the sacrifice… Its a scene that will leave an impact on the audience…

    Can’t wait for the show… Hope more trailers will be uploaded

    Hi paul, so what the rating like for Felicia’s new drama like now and the avrg rating for chris and zheng ge ping drama overall… this 2 local drama are telecast after the mid yr blockbuster T.U which 1st week rating is about 900000 plus.. but we dont know the overall avrg fig also.. so these 3 local drama shown during the 2nd half of the year, which is currently leading? Because i notice that the dramas for 1st half of this yr, their ratings are better as you compliment the rating more, however from T.U, to Lan Xiong Lan Di and to now the baby bonus.. you dont really mention. so i guess our drama rating goes downward again? i guess the first half of the year, the dramas rating are higher is due to the TLN effect as many of the viewers pin up more hopes after watching the very good TLN by J.A…

    by guess and assumption though. no need to give us exact rating.. just briefly mention out of these 3 dramas, T.U, Lan Xiong Lan Di and baby bonus, which one is better now cos we all know T.U is the lowest from Jan to June in rating. is that true, i hear it somewhere though.

    frankly, there are also many talented and hardworking actors around. Do they have so many chances and opportunity too?

    Elvin is lucky that MDC is promoting him so hard, (paul including you). Of course he should be given a chance if he has the right attitude, but he is very lucky because without his looks (although i dont necessary agree that he is good looking), he is really nothing. He is still not condemned as compared to some others although he has screwed up so many times.. So Elvin, you better be working your butt off since MDC has not given up on you…

Some take a min. to thrust thing into their brain, some might take longer, so, everybody, please relax, just give Elvin some more times, and he will excel.     i suppose people seem to feel Riz has character flaws, they seem to think those incidents show she lacks truthfulness and credibility so on and so forth, which she has/needs to work at. to represent singapore is something big, a public figure, so it is wise to let her go….

    i think you should take actions against that youtuber (the one that nobody mentioned above). it’s insulting to the celebrities, and even to your team who worked so hard to bring out those nice trailers.

    sharing the trailers online is definitely fine, but not editing and insult it. i hope that this fellow gets a lesson. this should not be tolerated.

Maybe it is because Jeanette has improved so much that he is so impressed and he is beginning to be j-e-a-l-o-u-s of her? He is a joke! To the person behind those clips, if you happen to see this: When you fail to make a joke out of it, you end up being the joke. The r-e-a-l joke!

    I am sorry if you 2 have misunderstood what I meant.
    The key phrase in my comment is ‘an abundance’, meaning excessive promotion. Besides, it wasn’t even implied that trailers should be reserved for bad drama, and that there should be no trailer for Anniversary Series.
    Misunderstandings tend to arise when readers lack comprehension and inference skills.

    Paul, why is it a small thing to tarnish our artiste’s image and reputation. This kind of alteration and adding words that are not completely true is definitely inconsistent and if the person is to be sued in court, he/she will definitely lose.

    It is affecting Jeanette in the eyes of prospective producers and directors who may have second opinion to engage her to do commercial filming.

    I demand the YT video to be removed or else face the music. Critics ought to be socially responsible for what they are writings.

    i recently saw a trailer on a new show which cast zhu houren and xiangyun and tay ping hui and darren lim. struck by the unnatural acting of felicia chin. quite a disappointment that after all previous experiences, the standard of acting stays “hanta kaki” – could it a lack of talent?

    pardon me, needed to clarify – the standard of felicia chin’s acting stays ‘hanta kaki’. i really don’t mean the rest of the artiste. felicia seems to have a long way to go, i kind of feel that even kola’s expressions are even more natural, although kola is much newer.

    You are certainly giving much publicity to this show…hopefully, it will NOT be a letdown in terms of the plot, storyline etc…
    As for Elvin, I am sure he can take on this role well and I am supportive and glad that he is given this role ….Jia You, Elvin.
    Seriously, MediaCorp should go and study how Taiwan and Hongkong do/script their dramas…very cool scripts with excellent casting and acting!

    The person who mocked JA as wood xuan just to proof more to everybody that Jeanette is very very popular, pretty, has improved a lot on her acting and speaking, and this “brainless” person just envy her so much.

    Aiyooo the slapping is so hard, how many times do they have to repeat this scene? Sure both of their faces are very red after that….
    Just shocked and curious to see this adding scene.

    In my opinion, I think we should just leave that case of that someone doiong that video on ‘Woodxuan’.

    Directors will surely look as artiste’s previous works for selection for shows. Their casting decision should not be affected by petty views of others.

    Just my personal opinion, the Baby Bonus drama comes out very lively because of one person. That person is Tay Ping Hui. His character in this movie is sophisticated and he has manages to bring out this character very well.
    Without him, even with Olympic only, this baby bonus drama wont be so hilarious.

    Felicia, yes her acting has improved, but it’s still not comfortable to watch on some scenes, it’s just not natural enough, still needs more drama to develop further. I am sure she can do it.

    Kola, yes agree, on the trailer of Together could feel her expression is very very good considering she is just a newcomer. Just give her more chances, she has the looks and acting skills. You all have chosen the correct person to ask Kola to play in this drama, someone new, fresh, but not disappointing. Waiting eagerly for Together drama.

    Can we please take legal action against that wood xuan. A total pest and a thorn in my flesh. The way he defamed Ou Xuan had really hurt her and her fans. I am feeling very injustice about her.

    Baby Bonus is not that great a show that Paul had been raving about. Felicia Chin acting is not that powerful… It really shows her ordinary. Zoe also mentioned about this.

    Lastly, her acting is kind of so-so, not good not bad but a little irritating. Wonder if she would change her character and not continue acting as a Ah Lian and act cute throughout the 23eps. It would be rather sian. Can she change to a more responsible mother?

    On today’s New Paper, they mentioned Chris and Fann’s Malacca Wedding is very warm-hearted one. Very happy to know that the cast of “Together” : Jeanette, DYT, Ge Ping Hui Fang, Aileen, Elvin, and all production crew, they could take a rest for a while and attend their Malacca Wedding.

    Jeanette has a lot of fans in Malacca. At the wedding, many guest are asking to take photos with her in turn. Have Jeanette and DYT picture also on the paper.
    I could tell that DYT is very tired, could see it from his eyes and he really loss weight.

    Actress Jeanette Aw almost upstaged at the Chris Lee-Fann Wong’s Malacca wedding last night. This would have been so if she’d turned up in a sexy,body-hugging outfit. The little nyonya was in Malacca filming a new 36 episode drama, Together, and could not attend the wedding banquet in Singapore. But when she finally could-along with the rest of the cast, which included DYT, Elvin, GePing, Hui Fang and Aileen and the production crew-Jeanette was worried.

    It turned out that the day was packed with several scenes to be shot – and one of them was where she had to wear a tight, gold dress for her role as Yao Jianhong, a young woman who was forced into becoming a dance hostess to help her father pay off his gambling debts.
    When we visitted the set, Jeanette told The New Paper: “Oh dear, we were told we may not have enough time to return to the hotel to freshen up and change, so we may have to end up going to the wedding in whatever we’re wearing.”
    Luckily, they managed to wrap up early and Jeanette arrived in a pretty dress.
    But before she had a chance to get settled in, a steady stream of delighted guests walked up to her and with pleas to pose for pictures with her.
    That’s because The Little Nyonya-which was set in Malacca- was a hit there.
    One of the guest said: “This is such a treat for us tonight. Not only do we have our own superstar Ah Soon (as Christopher is fondly known to everyone here), we’ve also got Yueniang (Jeanette’s character in TLN)

    but very happy to see the cast of Together attended the wedding, it shows the unity of MCS artistes. And at the same time also advertise for Together hor, haha. Some artistes can really be very nice, just don’t understand why some artistes don’t want to talk to their fellow colleagues, haiz, why make life so hard on yourself & others leh. Look at Fann & JA, they get along well without having to intrude into each other privacy, that’s really admirable lor.
    Don’t need to avoid colleagues mah, just give each other space will do lor.

    no talent, “jin gan kor eh”-”very difficult”, but she’s quite pathetic already, she tried to improve her looks so much, given so much chance, yet unable to impress with her acting, which is the core business of an actress, please put yourself in the shoe of “exaggerate queen”. that’s why she needs so-called “news” to stir some talk and awareness for herself to become “gossip queen”. afterall she’s ex-star search 1st prize wor, so mdc, must still try out something for her. if after repeated failures, then maybe mdc will give the chance to someone else. just bear with it for the time being until the show finishes, or just tune in to other channels 1st. i for one, have not watched a single episode to spare myself the agony of watching her unnatural acting. but, i think nanny daddy and together should be good. so, don’t lose heart in channel 8, okie, my friend??

    Hey paul, I would like to share with you my thoughts on Dai Yang Tian. If Star Awards 2010, Dai Yang Tian got nominated as Best Lead Actor won’t he be fighting against strong actors like Chen Han Wei and Tay Ping Hui. I can honestly say I am very proud of him to rise up in the showbiz so fast. However, if he do win Tay Ping Hui will lose his face to the media and the whole of Singapore for losing to a newbie. But Dai Yang Tian’s acting is so much better when Chen Han Wei or Tay Ping Hui first joined. What are you thoughts on this ? Do you think Dai Yang Tian has a chance ?
