Knock-Knock 敲敲门: Rui En 瑞恩
Rui En revealed how she felt about being snubbed at the annual Star Awards, why she would still say ‘NO’ to going on ‘艺点心思 Celebritea’ (hosted by Guo Liang & Quan Yi Feng) and more… Discover the real Rui En as you read on in my 1st series of interviews with stars titled ‘敲敲门 Knock-Knock’ where the questions actually come from ‘YOU’.

Q: What are some of the challenges/difficulties that you faced while filming ‘Happy Family 过好年’(it was previously called ‘全家福’), in which you have to portray a bubbly girl, very different from your own personality?
RUI EN: “This probably was one of the most challenging roles I have taken on so far, second only to “Metamorphosis”, simply because 小冬 and her world was so foreign to me personally. Many don’t realize that simplicity and innocence can be one of the most complicated elements to portray. It is precisely this quality that many of us have lost long ago, but seek to re-instill in our lives. I must admit that I felt intimidated by her initially, but have only grown to fall very much in love with the character. It was and is my honor to be able to inhabit 小冬’s world for a little while, for she taught me many things. Some times, I can’t wait to leave a particular role/character behind, other times, you fall in love with the character. This was one of those roles for me, very strangely enough.”
“Our world has become very complicated, hasn’t it? I hope that 小冬 reminds you that things actually can be very simple, we just tend to complicate things for ourselves.”
Q: If you were given a chance, what kind of role/drama do you wish to work on?
RUI EN: “I would give anything to do another police/action kind of role. Incredibly demanding but completely worth it. Also very interested to play “darker”, more human roles. Perhaps someone with many regrets in her past. Even someone on a mission of revenge. A spy, a secret agent.”
Q: Do you foresee yourself being in the entertainment industry for the long term? I hope so coz I would miss your singing and acting if you would to leave the entertainment industry one day.
RUI EN: “It depends what your definition of “long term is”. As much as I love what I do, there will definitely come a time when I feel I’ve given all I have to give, and that it’s time to move on.”
Q: What really makes you move on and venture in this career even though you hate the “side effects” of this entertainment industry.
RUI EN: “The love of acting and singing, and the understanding and acceptance that every profession has its fair share of cr*p, you just have to deal with it.”
Q: Fans cry foul over you missing out on Star Award’s Best Actress nominations as An Xiaoqian (Metamorphosis) and Zhang Yuhang (By My Side); were you disappointed?
RUI EN: “It only bothers me that it really bothers my fans.”
“I have learned how dangerous and futile it is to base my personal feelings and self-worth on “what other people think” and things like award nominations. So, no. I am thankful enough to have a job I love doing and don’t ask or expect any more.”
Q: Do you have any ambition in your career? As in, ultimately, what do you aim to achieve? For eg, A best female lead? An All-Time Favourite Artiste Award? Gain recognition overseas? High sales in your future album? Having a breakthrough role? etc.
RUI EN: “Likewise, these are things that I never think of or even strive towards. I get asked by reporters all the time about such comparisons in relation to the other “princesses”. To me, such comparisons are the equivalent of trying to determine which is the best and most popular : chicken rice, prata, mee goreng or char kuay teow. All have their own merits, following and appeal. In other words, it’s impossible to determine a concrete answer and a waste of time.”
“I am only in competition with myself, no one else. To continually compare yourself with others is incredibly destructive. My only goal is to keep pushing myself to grow as a person.”
Q: Are you willing to be on CelebriTea?
RUI EN: “No. I have been open and honest enough in the ST Monday Interview that was published last year. In a world where broken families are more commonplace than happy ones, I revealed what I revealed then in the hope of inspiring kids not to go down the wrong path. I draw the line there. To continue to repeat myself and those facts would be utterly exploitative – using my personal life to gain public sympathy. I have a very, very strong stand against that and I see absolutely no reason to do it simply to boost ratings. The individuals who invented all sorts of reasons in the press for my not wanting to be on the show, should really try to understand things from perspectives other then their own.”
Q: What make you change from bubbly girl to such quiet girl ?/ Don’t you ever feel compelled to conform, such as putting up your own blog like the rest of your colleagues?
RUI EN: “I was only “bubbly” in the earlier part of my career because I was trying to conform to what I thought the viewers would want, what I thought people would want from me. Back then it was a struggle all the time between who I really was and this extremely narrow-minded, sterotypical pre-conceived notion of what a “girl” should look and behave like. As proven, I was dead wrong and it didn’t work simply because it wasn’t me. I was uncomfortable all the time and felt as if I was trying to fit into someone else’s skin. There’s really no value in trying to conform for the sake of it.”
Q: You have more female fans these days; do you think it has anything to do with your personality, such that they saw you as their role model?
RUI EN: “I only hope that it’s because they identify with my non-conformist approach both in personal life and career. Even now, there are so many expectations, standards, even stereotypes that females are expected to adopt and fit into. There is so much pressure on women both at work and at home. I believe in the right to choose for yourself. A question I ask myself all the time : would you rather a fulfilled or obedient life? Of course, along with the right to choose, you also have to accept that every choice in life has consequences.”
Q: As an actress yourself, you know all the positive and negative sides of this job. Will you encourage any of your fans to take up this career?
RUI EN: “We are all conditioned by the world and society to base our self-worth and esteem on things like, am I pretty enough? What car do I drive? Do I own property yet? In other words, rather superficial things. In this industry, the extent of this is multiplied, and your rice bowl, ability to make a living can mostly become dependant on superficialities. You have to be mature and clear enough in your priorities to be able to differentiate all the factors, otherwise it becomes a very toxic job. So, no, unless one is mature enough.”
Q: Will you be willing to act in historical dramas which touches on the hardships of Singapore’s women in the past such as ” Hong Tou Jin” and “Ma Jie”?
RUI EN: “I would love to, it’s a genre I’ve never tried before. Just like 小冬, it would be an honor to be a part of that world for awhile.”
Q: Which is your favourite or most memorable role/character to-date?
RUI EN: “Xiao Qian from “Metamorphosis” will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Q: Many of us have this mentality that celebrities take up volunteering simply only for public scrutiny and media attention. Is this the reason why you have chosen to be low profile about this? What then prompted you to take up regular volunteering on your own accord and how did you managed to find time for this?
RUI EN: “I try to be low profile about this because the last thing I want is to utilize this to benefit my public image. I chose to answer this question only because I want to try to encourage more youths to volunteer. Like I’ve said before, we are an incredibly selfish generation and desperately need to learn to be unconditional.”
“I do this when I’m not filming and I decided to start out of a pure dissatisfaction with spending all my time doing things for myself and for my own benefit. I told myself, “There’s gotta be more to life than this.” And I was right. Making others happy makes me so happy. I love kids so I work with kids. There is so much we can do. Given the amount of time all of us spend on Twitter, Facebook, etc, ie. on ourselves everyday, couldn’t we take a little of that time to help others?”
Q: Who do you look up to in your life or rather how do you make your life as meaningful as it can be? I would really wish to learn this from you.
RUI EN: “Don’t compromise your beliefs, principles and integrity, no matter how hard it gets. Resist the easy way out, the process is so much more important than the end. Learn to be unselfish, considerate and unconditional. Build your self-worth with pure hard work and the resulting achievement, not with superficial things.”
“I will always be learning till the day I die, but this is what I can share with you now
”
Paul: “I want to thank Rui En for taking time out to share so much even though her schedule was so packed with the last leg of shooting ‘Happy Family’. Dear Readers, you may want to leave a comment here for Rui En after reading so much…”
“Many people have been trying to ‘force-fit’ stars into the ‘mould’ they expect them to be. Many stars simply become the ‘by-products’ of such ‘terrorism’. Isn’t terrorism all about making others conform to your ‘beliefs’?”
“Without your support or an avenue like this to hear them out in their true own words, we cannot claim to have known the stars.”
“Rui En is the 1st celebrity in this ‘敲敲门 Knock-Knock’ series and she is not the last. I have decided to extend this interview session to other stars and ALL the questions literally come from YOU. Celebrities can choose to reply them in emails, video-interviews or audio recordings – it is about giving them the freedom and space to share with us…”
(Note: Please do not start posting questions here until I announce the name of the next celebrity to be interviewed by YOU in an upcoming blog post).

can you let us ask felicia questions next? thanks=)
(Paul: She is out of town lah…I am thinking of stars who may not have a blog or who don’t reveal much in their blogs or you somehow know he or she hasn’t been opening up to share…)
:/ on 27 Oct 2009 at 12:12 pm #
Thank you so much for this. I really enjoyed reading it so much. And giving them the choice of answering via email gives stars like RE less stress in opening up or in sharing. Thanks so much.
“Many people have been trying to ‘force-fit’ stars into the ‘mould’ they expect them to be. Many stars simply become the ‘by-products’ of such ‘terrorism’. Isn’t terrorism all about making others conform to your ‘beliefs’?”
And Paul, that was so well said

Thanks Paul, for posting up Rui En’s replies to our questions.
In fact most of my questions were posted up and replied by Rui En.
Are these the only questions that you have interviewed her? Did she answer any other questions that were not posted up in the blog such as questions related to her upcoming drama “Happy Family”?
Btw will she be still singing the theme and sub-theme songs for that show?
Thanks in advance, Paul.

After reading Rui-en’s interview, i now know how the real Rui-En is. I even don’t know she does volunteering when she has free time.
Pls pass message to Rui-en to keep up her beliefs towards life. Thanks.

Paul, what’s your afterthoughts? You had “zero” interaction with her previously, what do you think of RE’s replies. Did it came as a surprise as in how much and what she said?
And did she choose the questions by herself or you collated it for her? It’s very very nice. Thank you!
(Paul: I am beginning to like her…really. I shortlisted the first round of questions – compbining repetitive ones and deleting ridiculous ones and she was given the list and then came her replies lor…)

as a matter of fact, it all depends on a person’s POV on what he/she thinks, same goes to what is the purpose of having programs such as CelebriTea. it was a heartwarming, quite inspirational post. i do respect her for the decisions she made to stand by her principles.

I must be too used to “全家福” that “过好年” looks v v weird. It’s too CNY-ish.
And Paul, if its possible, could you help us find out who would be singing the theme song for Happy Family if it’s not RE?
Thank you so much again. And thank you to Rui En too! And I hope you get to play police/action/darker roles too, we would love to watch that!
RUI EN: “I would give anything to do another police/action kind of role. Incredibly demanding but completely worth it. Also very interested to play “darker”, more human roles. Perhaps someone with many regrets in her past. Even someone on a mission of revenge. A spy, a secret agent.”

so Paul, should mediacorp scrap the show Celebri-tea huh? Even your own artiste doesn’t endorse it & Paul seems to agree with her hor, so pls tell mediacorp to scrap this show & stop exploiting the artistes’ private lives lor.
So Paul, isn’t Rui En the heroine & Mediacorp the baddie? So aren’t QYF & Guo Liang the rascals who keep probing? Hail Rui En the herione & slam down mediacorp, QYF & GL, the baddies, hooray.

rui en, she’s inspirational, she’s not fake, she’s quite deep person. quite a rare find. she doesn’t try too hard. u can tell she doesn’t pride herself even though she is so much a star. she appears aloof yet so loved because she has “guan zhong yuan”. it’s hard to explain – this guan zhong yuan thing thingie – u either have it or u don’t – she happens to be one of those who have it. yes, agree that for her role in metamorphosis – it is definitely deserving of at least a nomination of a best actress award. actually, joanne peh’s role is such a supporting role in TLN, yet she got nominated. did she politic her way up to get that nomination? she’s so undeserving to even get a nomination, yet she won. imagine the thousands, tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of supporters of jeannette, chenliping but rui en who didn’t even get a nomination. well, this only made us love rui en, jeannette and chenliping (who are both so deserving of a win) more. so the love that rui en and jeannette/chenliping received as a result of the non-nomination and non-winning respectively made them greater actresses, so much deserving yet not appropriately recognised. guess no matter how much an actress can try politics, she can never outdo what genuine support from fan can achieve. what the actress achieved through politiking by associating with government officials or other means etc will not last. she is in one time and she’ll be out forever. so to rui en, even if u have not been nominated, u r not less but much more than the most undeserving winner. who are the best – the answer is found in the hearts of the fans, not by the person winning – as this can be manipulated but not the genuine support of fans. i’m so happy i spoke. u lose the battle (lost the nomination to best actress 2009) yet u win the war (our favour and ardent support). same too for chen liping and jeannette. the injustice will not go unnoticed. fans will never sweep what happened (best actress award 2009 and telling of lies yet wnning the award) under the carpet and pretend nothing has happened. we are human with intelligence and wisdom. the anger we feel will be turned to love for the so-called “losers”, namely, rui en, jeannette and chenliping.

Paul, thanks a lot for this interview. And Rui En, thanks for your sharing with us.
After finished reading, I can really feel her passion for her job, despite all the odds. And this is definitely one of the most true and accurate interview being done. There is no 断章取义 or distortion of answer bcos what we see here is exactly her reply. This is one of her reply which I like a lot.
“There is so much we can do. Given the amount of time all of us spend on Twitter, Facebook, etc, ie. on ourselves everyday, couldn’t we take a little of that time to help others?”
This has been very inspiring and motivating. I will try to work towards that.
And I want to tell her that not only Xiao Qian from “Metamorphosis” will always hold a special place in her heart, but in her fans’ heart as well. =)
(btw quan jia fu is such a nice name…why change? and if change also dun need to change to guo hao nian, it sounds very…hmm…shui bian?)

Everyone’s got their own set of thinking. Just as RE might be more comfortable with ST Monday Interview and email format, there would be others who could prefer Celebritea or F2F interviews. There is no need to generalise matters.
Everyone has their right to choose, and as RE said, “Of course, along with the right to choose, you also have to accept that every choice in life has consequences.” Whether or not the artiste attend Celebritea, it should be up to the artistes themselves and not us.
It would be to interview artistes who don’t have blogs etc. artistes with fans who are more deprived like us :/
DD on 27 Oct 2009 at 7:21 pm #
paul, it’s a fantastic idea to have such interviews with the stars; esp. those who are not so sociable and with good PR. From RE’s replies, her character seems quite close to JA’s; and both are not Mediacorp staff; what a coincidence. pls consider interviewing JA. tku
d:D on 27 Oct 2009 at 7:50 pm #
Thanks Paul for this great interview.
strange enough, i started supporting Rui En because of her aloof and non-conformist attitude towards the media and industry, something that is so rare amongst the superficial and PR attitude of so many other artists. its really a breath of fresh air amongst the many ‘fake’ artists especially in the showbiz where being good at what you do is not enough. one, more often than not, has to depend on interpersonal relationships to be given the good roles that would allow your talent to shine.
one can also see her passion for acting and singing despite all the bad reports (or the lack of any reports whatsoever). someone who is purely looking for fame and wealth would probably not be able stay for so long in the industry.
i really salute Rui En for being true to herself and steadfast in her values in the pursue of her dreams.

Rui En (and Paul too),
Thanks for this interview. I love how you stay true to yourself, without compromising your beliefs and principles in life, something that is extremely difficult to do so given the world we live in.
It’s amazing that despite all the success/fame you may be getting, you can still remain so grounded in your values, and I admire you for that. It’s great to know that you volunteer with only one sole purpose in mind, which is to help others and bring joy to people other than yourself, because that’s what volunteering is all about.
All the best in your future shows! God bless.

if paul says it is for those who do not have a blog, then he should only interview those without a blog, even though i want very much for him to interview my favourites like jesseca liu, jeannette, eelyn, quan yifeng. he has to be above board. if it is for those without a blog, then he jolly well stick to his purpose, yah? as u can see there is a long list of non-bloggers, so bloggers will then have to wait, i suppose. anyway, paul has their blogs as linkages. u can find out more there. give others a chance bah!

To Paul Chan : So how was my Suggestion to u for using the Song 最后一次 as the Sub Theme Song for 红白囍事 ? Will u guys take into consideration ?
Hope the production team will & do help me convey my Suggestions to them once they start filming the Series ! And Paul , please reply me to tell me personally do u think it is a good Suggestion ? Thanks !
To Paul Chan : I have a Suggestion for next year’s upcoming Drama Serial 红白囍事 – New Beginnings : That is to use that touching song 最后一次 composed by a 17 Year old girl which was reported in the Papers recently for it’s Sub Theme Song as the lyrics fit the criteria of a 白事 in a sense …
As for it’s Theme Song can be another song related to a 红事 ….
Here are The Two Videos for your reference for the song – 最后一次 :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_duTfJRp6E&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENFkc3KERfg&feature=related
(Paul: Songs used in our dramas must be copyrights granted to us…we cannot just go get a song because chances are these producers will ask sky-high prices….)

thanks paul, this is a great platform for us to understand the artistes who prefer to keep a low profile. i’m guessing this blog is not profit driven so you don’t need to interview artistes just because they sell magazines.
i agree with :/ that it really is up to the individual what kinda platform they prefer to express themselves on. some peeps can’t write to save their lives so let’s just spare them an email interview yea? and if others feel going on national tv is the best way to connect with their fans, then so be it. it’s like trying to determine the best food once again, some love it some loathe it, some excel in it some crash out in it, that’s life. there’s no need to scrap celebri-tea, rui en being totally against it doesn’t mean it’s a flop – one party wants to exploit, while some parties are willing to be exploited because they don’t feel it’s exploitation, plus many other parties enjoy watching the dramedy, it’s a win-win situation lah.
ah, this interview: this lady writes well, it’s a real joy to read. the one point that left a deep impression was how she respects every character like a real human being, the passion she has for acting shows. to rui en: your humble and unwavering attitude towards life is an inspiration, thank you for sharing.

It’s rare for Rui En to share her inner thoughts with us. Thank you Paul for conducting this interview (even if it’s through email), but it’s a nice one nevertheless. =)
I respect her decisions, and it’s even more admirable that she stays true to herself. Rui En ftw!
P/S: 过好年 sounds too CNY-ish indeed, gives me the impression that the theme song will be those “dong dong chiang” kind. Haha! I wish the title would remain as 全家福. =P

Paul: Songs used in our dramas must be copyrights granted to us…we cannot just go get a song because chances are these producers will ask sky-high prices….)
To Paul Chan : Thanks for your reply ! But last time got MEDIACORP Local Dramas also got use popular Artistes songs which are in their Albums one ? Aren’t those even more expensive ?
Besides this song ( that I have suggested ) has not been made into an Album yet & though the singer is quite a popular figure now because of the Newspaper report , she is NOT very popular until the point everyone KNOWS her yet , so I think there is a likely chance the prices will not be that high …
Try using & asking la … No harm trying & asking ma , Paul ? If u don’t try how do u know whether it will be very expensive or not ? Besides it is a really good song & the lyrics do really fit the 白事 criteria !
(Paul: Ok, I go tell the Executive Producer of teh drama…hehe)

Paul,
This is not a comment of this post in particular but a comment on this wonderful blog in general. I am a big fan of Mediacorp Drama and I find it a great joy to read the exclusive updates, news and interviews on this blog that you spend a lot of time and effort maintaining. Keep it up.
My only grievance is that the Channel 8’s official website is not even 10% as good as this. In a world where people connects via Facebook and Twitter, the channel’s website, which has remained relatively unchanged throughout the month, seems sadly dated. I want to know more about the actors, the actresses, the latest drama production, information about the shows that would be aired. But NOTHING is on that site.
Thankfully, now BaguaTV makes my day. More more more please. Thank you so much…
(Paul: Thank you ah…no worries, you will see and experience a whole new Ch 8 website soon…)

Hi Paul, lots of fans are very concerned about whether Rui En will still be singing the theme and sub theme songs for “Happy Family”… could you please kindly find out about this.
Well, at most the reply that we want to get from you would be either a ‘Yes’ or a ‘No’.
Thank you so much, Paul!
[Thanks Paul, for posting up Rui En’s replies to our questions.
Thanks in advance, Paul.]
(Paul: All the questions given to her and she reverted with what was posted lor…I don’t think she is singing any of the songs..copyright issue again lah…)

Random: Maybe one day RE could shave bald and act as a patient!
“I would give anything to do another police/action kind of role. Incredibly demanding but completely worth it. <<< Paul, tell YXB this!!! Haha. (Are there other EPs who do police/action too???)
Also very interested to play “darker”, more human roles. <<< Drug addict!!!

Hmm… Rui En once mentioned that she regretted giving up on learning ballet when she was in secondary school. Suddenly an idea came to my mind that it would also be good if she can portray a role of a dancer going against all odds to become a successful ballet dancer. Then maybe both Jeanette and Rui En can have the chance to be together in a drama. It would also be a good opportunity for Rui En to do something which she likes but was not able to fulfil her passion in the past.
Hope that Rui En would consider such roles too!

with regards to comments by “pat and paul, the P family”, we have to 1st confirm paul is still single. actually, if he is not i would prefer pat to go with brandon wong, another joker or zhou chong qing (think he is still single). a joker is still more suitable for pat. so if paul is not prepared to lose pat, he has to brush up on how to be a joker 1st.

Can interview Zhang Yao Dong? He doesn’t have a blog and I hardly saw him on mag cover. And Pierre Png? Thanks.
Btw there is a similar thing to knock-knock called Asks the Stars in the channel 8 website, but it doesn’t seem to be in used anymore.

Hi Paul, just curious…. did Rui En answer all the questions that you sent to her via email? Or did she only answered those posted? Thanks.
(Paul: Only those posted…the rest she didn’t)

Thanks Paul. We met.
This is a wonderful initiative at your end to bring us ‘closer’ to our favourite artistees. Thanks, again.
I like the way Rui En answered – so real, so her, so unpretentious.
Many a times, pple lose themselves and succumb to societal / work pressures. It is certain that Rui Eng has stood firm on her principles. Salute!

haha.. i tink it wld be great to interview jesseca liu too(: there’s actually alr some few qns i would like to ask her alr. because recently she had quite a few shows- romantic delicacies (a breakthru role for her) and baby bonus. so i wld say , i feel tt we r curious abt her coz she is also a bit lyk rui en, the quiet type, yet dare to try meaty roles. thanks

one celebrity i’d really want to know more about is TERENCE CAO. i know a lot of people don’t like him, and i think it’s because of this biased or warped idea they have of how he is like outside his reel-life. i’d really like to see what he has to say about these issues, because he doesn’t have a blog and isn’t on social networking sites; you know, stuff like that. btw, thanks for the informative interview with ruien!

Hi Paul, do you think you could help feedback to the relevant department for “My School Daze” to repeat its run after “Housewives’ Holiday”, weekends 4.30pm from 19Dec onwards?
I understand that according to the first airing schedule, “Table of Glory” is right after HH but HH succeeded “The Reunion Dinner” in the weekend rerun slot, bypassing “The Dream-Catchers”. I presumed its because youths do not form the core of the weekend viewers?
In any case, MSD features 4 cast from “Happy Family”. Repeating from 19Dec will see the last episode ending on 17 Jan, a day before HF premieres on 18Jan. If it’s going to rerun anyway, why not warm the crowd for HF?
And repeating TOG after HH might confuse the viewers with DYT, Kola and Zheng Geping all in Together and TOG.
Do consider. Thanks :/
(Paul: I will pass on your msg to them…tks)
