瑞恩 Rui En = Star Award’s Best Actress nomination?
Veteran actor aka last Star Award’s Best Supporting Actor Zhu Hou Ren said in his interview with i-Weekly that Rui En should win the next Star Award’s Best Actress. He said he was impressed with her role in 过好年 Happy Family which according to him was ‘just right’ (meaning not over-acting or under-performing). He even claimed that the panel of judges would be ‘blind’ if Rui En was robbed of her chance at the Star Awards. Really meh?
Oh well…let’s hear from you and tell me which role she played was most impressive and stand a good chance if you were the judge. Vote and see if most number of people is on your side as that role may just nail it for Rui En. Of course, she will be up against many other fine actresses but I want to find out just which of her 3 uniquely portrayed roles would garner her a chance from her fans…

Just saw the photos of the imaging sessions of Love in Two Cities. Rui En looked fabulous. While many women dread the big 3-0, I think Rui En has really blossomed into a beautiful woman. From an angst-ridden teen to yuppie rebel with a cause to a confident and self-assured lady.
Really like and appreciate the Rui En that is her now. Mature, confident and womanly. It’s a wonderful coming of age.

Hi Paul,
I heard rumors saying MCS will not renew Zoe’s contract, is that true?
They said judging from her recent popularity (out of top 10, even losing to Michelle Tay) and her even bigger flop movie Love Cuts (Production Cost: 1mil, Box Office: 90k, net loss: 910k), it’s not reasonable to keep her with the money she’s paid.
Please confirm this, as I’m sure some people, although very few, will be concerned about this as well.

Well,y not let it re-runs after love Concierge,weekends @4.30pm. My parents said that the timeslot was absurd. Only ppl having sleepless nights would watch -spare a thought for students. Furthermore,is Love Blossoms better than HV?
I watched Star Search ytd & find it pathetic to see Yifeng & Dasmond going to the streets to “search stars”. Most of them are not interested & some pretended not to see them. The hosts looked embarassed & awkward when approaching strangers. Also,they should not be so straight-forward & realistic if “what they saw from afar did not match their requirements”-humilation?
Holding auditions @various countries will do a better job. People who are interested will come forward. They are just makeing SS look “lowclass” & hosts themselves,look desperate.

Actually I like all 3 characters acted by Rui En.
You can never find traces of Rui En in these 3 characters.
Particularly, I like Xiaodong most. She acted it out very naturally. Who will expect to see Rui En in this kind of role. Smiling cheerful and very positive kind of character. Best is She nv overact. Like what zhu hou ren said Just nice.
Siqi was great too. her crying scenes are real good but I think it’s abit wasted because the scenes was either being cut off adruptly or too short.
Hu xiao man was Cool and very smart . The bu ze shou duan part was very well done but however Unriddle didn’t give Rui En enough space to show her acting which is quite a pity.
I think Rui En do deserve to get nominate for best actress at least!

Yeah Paul, I keep looking at the photos from 8gg and yes it’s Jeanette’s body which is thrown into the sea. I could imagine it’s not easy at all, being thrown into the sea as dead body, cannot move at allllll. To jump into the sea from the ship is already quite scary, now is being thrown.
And I guess it’s not one time shoot, how many times she’s being thrown to the sea?

I saw some pictures of the filming of ‘Breakout’ in 8gg. Frankly speaking, I am expecting a lot from Jeanette Aw in ‘Breakout’. She just gets better and better each time I see her. From ‘The Little Nyonya’, to ‘Together, and to ‘New Beginnings’. Every portrayal just gets better, and better. I like Jeanette Aw for the fact that she is a very nice and genuine lady. I also like Jeanette Aw for the fact that she puts in her very best each time in putting up a good show for everyone. She will be the thing to watch in December, apart from the final chapter of Harry Potter. Haha

I think Rui En is an actress who knows clearly, what she wants of herself in the roles entrusted to her, and from there, she’ll work hard towards it. The role Ye Si Qi in ‘With You’ played by Rui En definitely deserves a spot at the nomination list of the Best Actress Award next year. Her portrayal was very much like how Jeanette Aw portrayed her role in ‘Together’. Apart from good, it is still good. Her role was very much like a beautiful damsel in distress and she managed to bring it out so well, that many people cried with her portrayal of the crying scenes. Rui En clearly deserves a shot at the Best Actress Award next year for her portrayal in ‘With You’, finally. No doubts.
Another actress whom I feel deserves a shot at the Best Actress Award next year is Jeanette Aw. Nominated for 4 times for the Best Actress Award, but not awarded yet. I hope she does not become the female version of Tay Ping Hui who is nominated for 7 times for the Best Actor Award, but not awarded yet. Jeanette Aw’s performance in ‘New Beginnings’ was flabbergasting. It was a quiet role which not many people will notice it, but she managed to bring the role out loudly. It attracted the attention of many people. For that, she deserves a shot at the Best Actress Award, again. Also, I’m hoping to see her break-out of her usual self in ‘Breakout’ which will be on air in December, and from there, we’ll see whether her portrayal in the show is nomination-deserving.
Anyhow Paul, do you have any idea when will the casting of ‘A Song To Remember’ take place??

I beg to differ from some of the opinions around.
I don’t feel that it’s appropriate to say that RE’s acting in Unriddle was exaggerated. In fact, why would she go for over-the-top acting when she has been adopting subdued tones all along? We have to keep in mind that this is a drama of a different genre. A police thriller demands a different style of acting from the usual heartlander family drama. What’s more, acting is teamwork. An actress probably should not simply take care of only her own performance; she may have to take into account the overall effect of the production. Hence, some intense expresssions may be needed for some scenes to help build up the tension or create the intriguing atmosphere in the story.
Admittedly though, these are purely personal speculations, not what RE may actually have in mind.
And I guess the reception to an artiste’s acting is a really subjective thing. Why else would you see some praising CLP while some dismiss her as being helfself again?
Personally, my vote goes to Hu Xiaoman of course. I actually feel traces of RE in Xiaodong and particularly the slightly aloof Siqi (no offence, I like her portrayal nevertheless). At first glance, Hu Xiaoman does seem to be the character that’s closest to RE’s image. As you watch the show though, you see that the sort of coolness she exhibits is entirely different from what RE normally displays. The toughness, the vivacity, the self-confidence and the competitive streak are hardly found in the usual kind of cold characters assigned to RE for the past few years. Furthermore, Xiaoman goes through a wider spectrum of emotions and experiences: loss, betrayal, anxiety, hurt, perseverance, triumph. Compared to the other two roles, we see much more multi-dimensional acting.
Just my two cents worth. Like I’ve said, the evaluation of acting is subjective.

看了几集的“走进走出”，再回想之前演过律师角色的男女艺人，始终觉得演得最好的当属“黄碧仁”及“王沺裁”这两位！其他的. . . . 例如目前这四位还有待改进呢！而那位讲台词时口齿不清，现已贵为人母淡出演艺界，并移民香港的前才华冠军所演译的更是一大败笔！
若接下来的剧集再有女律师之类的女主角，也许可考虑集演技＋实力派的“瑞恩”，相信她的表现绝不比其他人逊色，甚至于更好！
非常期望新传媒戏剧组会安排我喜爱的偶像“欧萱”及欣赏的“瑞恩”同剧演出！不在于两人之间的“对决”，只在于将目前最受欢迎，表现也较佳的两位聚在一起演出，把最棒的呈献给观众欣赏，谢谢

i tink ruien did really well in all 3 roles, but my personal favourite is her role in unriddle. somehow she really suits policewoman roles

Perhaps it is high time that members of the public/viewers get to have a share in voting for the Best Actors and Actresses. If we do get to have a say in Most Popular Artistes, I do not see why is that so we should not have any say in Best Acting as well.
It could be done in a way where the professional judges still get to assess their acting, yet we get to nominate our actors/actresses too. Out of the 5 nominations in the category, why not let 1 of the nomination be the one voted by public? It would seem equally fair, since we do not/have never seen the faces of the judges.
I am not saying the assessment might be unfair or placed in a bias point of view, just that by involving the public, it may occur as an interaction and who knows, there might be more people attracted to local dramas in the long run.

Paul,do you think JA will win best actress next year?i think its time she should..she is only 31 yet she is really good in acting,tried so many different roles though majority all good good roles….this year,she played a funeral director and she did well,the role very plain,but yet she still shined in it..she even appeared in so many variety shows like STARS for a cause,entertainment on 5 and one moment of glory,she should host more shows and appear as a judge more often in both english and chinese,its because she is fluent in both languages.
When she judged OMG,she did her job as a judge perfectly,she came straight to the point,her comments were short and sweet,coming to the point and good too.she danced well too,in stars for a caused,she hosted well,she should host more programs because i feel she has the talent to host..she is getting better now,talking more and responding more in variety shows..she changed a lot,from last year’s prince and the princess where she dont know what to talk..now,right now,she is really talking so much,interacting much with audience..ii hope she can host..she is really such a beautiful and talented young actress..she acts so well and even took the courage to act in a baddie role..i “pei fu” her,she dance so well and a fast learner..her pole dance is awesome..

I like Rui En’s acting a lot and im glad that she had been trying out different roles. Out of the three, i’ll choose “Happy Family” cause i really love her role “Yang Xiao Dong” a lot. She acted so natural in that drama and that role was very different from the roles she tried in the past, which can actually let us see another cheerful side of her.
Till now, i still miss “Ding Dong” alot.

I thought RE’s role in WithYou was very similar to Jeanette role in Toegther where they have lots of emotional and crying scenes. And I still prefer this kind of emotional scenes so I guess nominate her in WithYou ba.

My vote goes to Ye Si Qi in ‘With You’
The crying scenes were too much for me to control my tears.. They just rolled down by cheeks everytime when I see Rui En cry in the show. Very well played. Rui En can really diversify. She’s a very versatile actress. No doubts about this. But then again, whether she will win the Best Actress Award next year or not will be up to her luck on that very night itself. In my opinion, the Best Actor and Actress Award will be the biggest thing. We’ll see..

of course rui en must nominate for BA!! i prefer WITH YOU, she act very natually in WITH YOU. she never act before as a mother, that quite new to me, so i like WITH YOU .YESIQI!!
HAPPY FAMILY,YANGXIAODONG, also quite surpising, she is normally cool and cold~ but in HAPPY FAMILY, she can act till so cheerful,happy go lucky type, she impress me a lot
as for UNRIDDLE,HUXIAOMAN, also quite new to me nice pairing with CLP,and she handle very well the emo sence, good job RUIEN(Y)
if can nominate all 3 tat would be great!!

Although I didn’t catch Happy Family & Unriddle and some parts of With You, I think that if Rui En were to win Best Actress with one of the roles, it’ll have to be With You. Agree that it was just a normal role, but still she left viewers impressed with the depth of her performance and making the character so real. So yup, my choice would be With You. But anyhow, if she doesn’t win, I think she’s still a very good, natural actress (:

Firstly, like to say nice commenting with you here. Secondly, i hope to be fair to all artistes, dun be so sure when u comment something. You haven’t see her performance and you start commenting. I feel that all artistes should be given their fair chance of comments in their performance and encouragement. It isn’t fair to her by jumping straight to your conclusion before even watching the show. And maybe you also have to see the script on how bad her role was. If the scripting on the bad role is not that powerful, you cannot put the blame on the artiste too. So let just watch before making your comments.
I feel that every artistes have put in their very best effort and hardwork to make each drama works. But sometime it not only the artistes effort, it’s really a team work. Rui En is really lucky enough to meet GOOD CO Artistes. From the guo hao nian, there is chen shu cheng and even that new guy is good too. In with you, there is han wei and adrian. And in unridddle , there is chen liping and tay ping hui. So honestly, you have to admit that good co actor help to push your performance to very next level too. But not all artistes are able to get such kind of chances. Please dun get me wrong that i am implying RE is not good, i dun have that kind of implication. But i feel that to make a drama work, it the work of good script, good artistes and good producer.
I just feel that, in this JA is not as lucky.. she always be paired up with people that are still not so “good” in acting lately. Actually, am really glad and lucky that this time JA co actor is Christopher lee. All the best to JA ..

一直很喜看欢瑞恩的演戏，因为荧幕上的她总能让人顿时忘记她就是那个我们所熟悉的艺人，每次演出都会给人惊喜。只能说能做到这程度的同辈演员不多，因此她的表现总让人期待的。
一年中的三个角色截然不同，她成功地颠覆了观众对她的印象，走出了自己的舒适地带挑战自我。
今年的三个角色；杨小冬、叶思琪和胡小曼都各有千秋，依然是大众至今津津乐道的电视主角，都值得肯定。因此要从3角色中3选一，难免让人无从选择。
如真要论，或许升级为人妻人母的叶思琪的表现最让我惊艳。
在叶思琪身上完全找不到瑞恩的影子，更无法让人将两者联想一起，
更没想过瑞恩能胜任如此细腻的角色。
看完《我在你左右》后，对剧中演员们的震撼一直久久无法散去。
因为他们在平凡中创造出了奇迹，更让我对剧中多位演员跨目相看。
身为女主角的瑞恩，演技更不在话下，深深牵动着观众们的心，带大家走入她的世界。
如果只能选择一个，那我希望叶思琪能够获得评审的肯定。

just like what :/ mentioned, i think all her three roles are deserving enough to be nominated had it been 3 separate years. this year, we really see how versatile she can get, portraying the 3 roles.
but to me, siqi really stands out in terms of her acting. she was able to portray her emotions so convincingly without overdoing it.
as for xiaodong, even though she acted brilliantly, i didnt really appreciate the storyline much. and xiaoman was good too, but i felt her character didnt have enough development

Si QI is definitely my choice. No doubt about it. It’s tough to tear in seconds. In front of the camera. With the right feel.
And from past awards, the best actress title is usually given to those who had a ‘bitter fate’ and ‘suffered alot’. Right? Xiangyun’s character in LIttle Nyonya also cried alot and she won the Best Supporting Actress..
So i predict that this time, Rui En will get the award with this character.
In With You, she cried so much and her eyes were puffy, couldn’t put much make-up. That’s alot of sacrifice leh..

All three roles were breakthrough performances considering how reality for Rui En was so much different from the on- screen Xiao Dong, considering the buckets of tear she had to shed, the extreme anguish and betrayal she had to constantly portray to perfection in With you, considering how she had to push her limits in her second cop drama in Unriddle.
This year, Rui En has indeed done a fantastic job fitting into the roles entrusted to her. Be it Xiao Dong, Ye Siqi or Hu Xiao Man receiving the tiara, all her roles would be equally deserving.

Your next post should be Qi Yu Wu = Star award’s best actor.
His performance in Family Court is superb especially the court scene between him & hong hui fang, I believe a lot of people move to tears where he recounted how he was sexually abuse in today episode.

I am very impressed with rui en in all 3 shows, in particular UNRIDDLE. she is simply cool and carry out her roles very well. it fits her like a fiddle.
Chen Li Ping is also good in her role in UNRIDDLE, and will be her greatest rival. Personally, I dun think JA can be anywhere closer in her baddie role in her upcoming show. Where has JP disappear to?

Ye Siqi wins my vote. Average story but her acting was solid throughout – it made the show worth watching, along with Chen Hanwei. she was convincing acting as a mother, which is surprising. To be fair though all three roles were played equally well by Rui En. If only Unriddle was less crammed, it would win full points. I think it had enough material to be stretched over five more episodes, maybe it would be less jumpy and irrelevant if it had more airtime. her acting was excellent throughout, but character development could be a lot better. As for Xiaodong, it showed that she could be versatile. it was shocking to me that she be cast in a role like that, but it’s a choice well made. I can’t imagine a lot of other mediacorp actresses playing that role on par. only thing was I didn’t appreciate the story well enough.
I agree that she should be nominated this time… being overlooked for her role as An Xiaoqian that time was a shame. So don’t make the mistake *again*.

Rui en is truly one of the better actresses around at Mediacorp these days. She is so convincing in every role she is in. And so natural too. She clearly deserves a Best Actress Award.

My ranking for most favourite role: 1) With You- Ye Siqi, 2) Happy Family- Yang Xiaodong, 3) Unriddle- Hu Xiaoman
My ranking for best performance: 1) Hu Xiaoman 2) Ye Siqi 3) Yang Xiaodong

I voted for Rui En’s role in With You though both XiaoDong and Xiaoman were equally good as well. I feel that out of the 3 roles, Siqi and Xiaoman are arduous roles but Siqi and XiaoDong are her breakthrough roles. Furthermore, Siqi role has more emotional scenes scene as compare to Xiao Dong.
No doubt RE’s acting and performance in these 3 roles were really well done (and I love XiaoDong so much!) but for SA Best Actress, Siqi will be the choice.

i cant see any reason for Rui En not to be nominated in BA next year..
but i dont like to feel disappointed, so nomination would be enough for me. nobody knows what the judges think, their ‘professional’ views are different from us..
if she gets nominated for two roles, i would be even happier.
i wont say she deserves the BA, but i would think the nomination is what she truly deserves.so come on Rui En you have my full support!!!

is there a rationale behind this poll?
personally i feel that all three characters have their own merits and flaws. there is simply no point in trying to determine which is the best. afterall, will the results of this poll be considered when it comes to the best actress nominations next star awards?
and like what :/ has mentioned, if she had done these 3 roles in 3 separate years, we would have nominated her 3times in 3 star awards because she is indeed that deserving.

Rui En deserves the Best Actress Award next year . She really impressed me this year with 3 different roles from Yang Xiao Dong / Ye Siqi to Hu Xiaoman . She really put in great effort in every role she played . With 3 dramas in a year she did not even turn down a single role because of tiredness as she did not want to dissapoint her fans . I really admire her as she once said in an interview that she does’t think much of getting the awards , she would even tell her fans not to spend too much money voting for her . Yang Xiao Dong – She gave us Joy & Laughter , Ye Siqi- She moved us making us emotional by crying along with her when she had crying scenes , Hu Xiaoman – She made us feel more heart broken as she hurt her ankle , she even cried on the set as she had a lot more action scenes that she had to do in a compromised state as she told heself that she is not going to use stuntmen for any of the shots . Hope you guys would agree with me .

good news that my dear AK is coming up with something BIG..this is good news..yes, paul, don’t throw away BIG roles to strangers like chris tong. give them to our best in our very own shore. then this is what i call excellence lah! cannot anyhow one, u know. u think audience are robots? we can’t just accept new faces over night, esp, BIG roles. u know, even my little cousin who have developed a love for eelyn in precious babes begin to dislike chris tong because she says it is unfair. so, u see, human psychology lah..even the little 5 year old also cannot take it, what more the older people leh? quote phua chu kang “use our brain”!!

the 2 nominations, i agree with zhu houren, yes, 过好年 and With You. One is happy go lucky. one is sad like bitterguord. 2 extremes. bound to be nominated and win will be yes, i agree with zhu houren, 过好年. the biggest rival-contender is jeanette. i expect jeanette to outperform her previous saddie-goodie role. if she doesn’t win this time (with her baddie role), my specs will also drop. so will be a tie rui en and jeanette. both are as popular too. these 2 are the queens.

I loved Rui En as Xiaodong very much. I liked how she portrayed that child-like demeanour so remarkably well. Unbridled laughter, unbridled sadness. Xiaodong was cute in a silly way, naive and innocent.
Everything about Xiaodong is so different from Rui En so much so that if Rui En actually do these things, I’d cringe in horror.
But yet she has the craftsmanship to immerse herself in Xiaodong and made her not just a silly girl but a silly lovable girl that everybody can endear with.

If I must choose, it would be Si Qi from With You, because so many nights I cried with her, I cried for her. It is a breakthrough for Rui En, something out of her comfort zone, like what she said.
I laughed and cried with Xiao Dong too, but MediaCorp seldom nominates comedic roles for Best Actress.
And I have a feeling that this year’s Best Actress might be a battle of breakthrough/not-the-usual roles. So the so-called “usual” roles might not be as attractive.
So my choice is clear, Siqi for me :/

Hi Paul, I thk rui en deserves the Best Actress award long ago. No doubts,Her acting is always that natural n no matter what role she is given to, she always can n deliver a totally different acting to it. A very gd example we can see clearly is the three roles she presented to us this year. These roles are totally different from each another but she is able to let us see that she is a very versatile actress with excellent acting! Especially the role in ” Happy Family”, her acting is damn good that we start to ask ourself:” is that the cool n quiet Rui en that we know of” ? Personally I prefer her to clinch the award frm “unriddle” cuz I simply likes the way she acted in the show. Cool, smart n gentle at times!! No offence to XXX or her fans, if Joanne can get her Best actress award y not Rui en ? She is well known among audience n her peers that she is the other princess ( beside Jeanette Aw) that can really acted well. Till now, I didn’t see any potential best actress winner for this year except her. Jeanette Aw might be her competitor but her role in 破天网 is consider leading actress or juz a supporting role?Anyway, i thk it is really time we should give the Best Actress Award to her.

Ha… honestly it is very tough for me to choose one out of the three. Coz there are roles which she acted well but I do not really like that character and vice versa.
But I think that the judges would choose the roles which has a more breakthrough for Rui En or roles which are considered to be the first attempt for Rui En. Therefore, I would vote for either Yang Xiaodong and Ye Siqi to be nominated for Best Actress award. Ultimately I strongly feel that it would be the most significant BEST ACTRESS award for Rui En if she is awarded for portraying the role of Yang Xiaodong. Coz she succeeded in portraying out the role very well and it is the role that rekindled her passion for acting. So my choice would be Yang Xiaodong to be nominated for Best Actress award in SA2011.
