First 5 Episodes of 最火搭档 Unriddle!
I just watched 5 epsiodes of ‘最火搭档 Unriddle’…and this time, I didn’t even press the fast forward button! Yes, it is that good. How good?
It is very pacy…well crafted story-telling style. I like how each episode begins with the event already taken place but quickly drawing us back into the hours or days just before the event…
陈莉萍 Chen Li Ping is marvellous. There’s one scene when there was no dialogue at all and she was hugging the belongings of her father…that brought tears out of me… This is going to be her most lovable character after her Holland V’s classic role to date! Best Actress nomination again…high chance of a sure-get-in position in the Top 5.
瑞恩 Rui En will surprise many in this role…the Executive Producer commented that Rui En reminded him of the young 邓萃雯 and that is a big compliment. You will be impressed by Rui En who played this character well in the grey area. She is also very blessed to be picked in dramas surrounded by some of the best artistes and that also bought out her best…
郑斌辉 Tay Ping Hui may stand a very big chance to grab that Best Actor trophy from 陈汉玮 Chen Han Wei (acted brilliantly in 五福到 and 我在你左右) for his role in Unriddle. It will be a good fight this time round. You can feel the intensity – his pain, guilt and anger and that he did not even need to express through any exaggerated facial expressions or body language. Just pure 眼神… Though he only appeared in the first 4 episodes (another 3 more towards the finale)…he will leave a very deep impression…
The supporting characters are equally fantastic. 陈邦鋆 Andie Chen has certainly proven that he is on the right track to position himself as a 性格派艺人 since we last saw him in ‘The Little Nyonya’. Wang Yu Qing is a complete different person from his 老飞鱼 role in ‘泳闯琴关 No Limits’. Li Wen Hai, Zheng Ge Ping, Brandon Wong, Joshua Ang, Zhang Wei and Zhou Ying also shine in their small roles. Even those who acted as pimps and thugs, they come alive in their roles… Oh well…I only saw the first 5 episodes and there are many more cameo appearances by other stars to come…

I have to be honest – I actually feel Chen Liping is simply Chen Liping in any drama. Right now is Chen Liping in a police show, and not the role, ie. Da Bao.
Whether or not that is acting, I’m not sure, but it kinda gets boring and predictable.

Chen Li Ping is awesome! She convinces me through her acting. She looks younger and cool in this drama… Wake up MDC, give her better and distinctinve roles, don’t waste her talents!
FOr those criticising her being too fat, first she is not a corp in this drama. As an informant, her plump figure might give her an advantage as she has that approachable look which bad people won’t fangbei her too much. Second, what’s wrong if a corp is slightly plump? Look at those female corps in western countries, I have seen many female corps with body fatter than CLP! And note that CLP is mighty sporty in this show! Give this actress a chance, try to appreciate her performance. She has gone through up and down in her career, yet remain as one of the phenomenal actresses who manages to surprise the audience.

alrighty, im re-writing feedback about unriddles, hoping this will post, second time around.
BRAVO to chen li peng for sucha outstanding performance. she’s pritty convincing as an informer *NOT A COP* she even cited in ep 9 that she wished she’s qualified to be cop, as per her father’s wish when he was alive. i being an ex-con, disqualifies her to join the police force.
she has a glib tongue in the series, and somehow, li peng’s tom boyish, strong-willed presence and her money-loving ways is one of the highlights of this series, cos she is THAT charasmatic! she makes the series more appealing, LOVE HER TO SHREDS!!! ^______^V
the series is a refreshing change from the half-baked scripted melodrama series about swimming and cello-playing *BIG YAWN* at least ive the desire to re-watch each episode again, and sometimes again AND again.
rui en is kinda adorable when she shouted “who snitched?” *in mandarin (shi shay) sorry i cant type chinese. her lips moved in an almost ferocious manner, and seemingly her nose moved a lil. VERY CONVINCING!! LOVE THAT SCENE! =P
the gal who act as baddie’s gf *she’s in a series about antique chinese bath tub* looks really different!!! she was slick, well-dressed and groomed to the nines always in that series *which btw, has the MOST INTELLIGENT SCRIPT* and in unriddles, she looks sickley and beyond recognition. kudos to the make up artist ^,^V
soooo glad tay ping hui is in that series as well. he RULES! he has the BEST DICTION of all actors/actresses, and in the event he decides to quit his acting job, sb should hire this dude as a compere/host/newsreader something along that line… PING HUI POSSESSES AN EXTREMELY GOOD VOICE!
just some puzzling parts of the series that left me kinda bewildered:
~ such dramatic music when rui en was walking in her well-cut gorgeous white dress and four inch spikey heels towards ping hui. just when i thot she was gonna whip out a silencer or shot gun of sorts from her fashionable gold bag in a bond-girl fashion, she emitted a faint smile, before proceeding to fine dining with ping hui. why the unnecessary dramatic suspense for sucha minor scene is truly puzzling *go figure!*
~ how did rui en know the whereabout of chen li peng? it was not explained whether she had “telepathic skills” or the strong nasal skill of a police alsatian. one minit she was chasing li peng, next minit she lost her, third minit she’s AT the coffeeshop where li peng was hiding *scratching head*
~ i doubt its appropriate for rui en to bid her mom *played by xiang yun* “never to wake up at all so as not to bother her again” as a good nite wish (ep 2). raised my eye brows instantly and left me in a shock.. seriously! joke or no joke, sucha statement is simply not called for.. its like wishing her mom dead =(
~ how come priscillia was constantly wearing a TWO-PIECE sweat shirt outfit (ep 9) i thot singapore is about 90-100 degree F, her outfit is what a san franciscans aka californian will wear *weather about 60′s F and kinda windy and cool* i felt her discomfort. she’s btw, an excellent n a beautiful actress.
just citing sum observations, that is all..
all in all, love this series!! tis really enjoyable, i do look forward to watching the next episode *anticipate, anticipate* XDDD

It’s so true that singapreans should learn to be more supportive of local productions. It’s true the newspaper kept showing negative news report and makes the show seemed like there were many who do not like unriddle. But, in fact, they are only picking out the slightest thing which were not linked to the story plot? Like hello? are you watching the story or are you here to pick up details like “CLP is not fit to be a police woman because of her size?”
It’s really ridiculous that such comments have been made. In fact, the plot of unriddle is “slow pace” however, it is exciting and anticipating. It keeps the “secretive” means going on. All casts and crew gave their best in producing this drama which majoirty thinks that it is the best drama that mediacorp has ever produced!
So dear all backstage crews, producers, casts and people who contributes in unriddle, thumbs up to all of you!
Hope all of you all get the recognition and credit you all deserve!

There seems to be much food for thought in this show, especially after each case.
“People would do a lot of irrational things out of love, but too much love can cause harm.”
“No matter how tough and violent a man is, he will always be vulnerable in front of the woman he loves.”
“Nobody can give you up, only you can give yourself up.”
And the proposition that one would feel betrayed when someone we love goes missing. I thought it’s very real. I like the way Rui En misses her Dad and how Xiangyun hates him, it feels really real :/

gotta agree with !!, rui en is hot in unriddle (lots has been happening at the edmw forum.) really really enjoyed her chemistry with clp, especially when they’re bickering. they made those typically dull and cheesy lines bearable, interesting and even hilarious at times.
though there’re flaws and loopholes, this is a very good ch8 production. hope the production team and cast get the recognition and credit they deserve.

I think Singaporeans need to be more supportive of local shows. Stop being so critical and give credit where credit is due. Yes, this show has it’s flaws, but why can’t you see that it’s the best show Mediacorp has produced in a long time? Don’t you see the effort and sincerity put in by the production simply to produce a good show for the audience?

Paul, have you seen the comments about this drama in the other forums and on Twitter? Naturally there will be some criticisms, but overall, the majority agrees that this is the best show Mediacorp has produced in a long time. This drama has even pulled back some of the people who have written off Mediacorp dramas.
Kudos to the cast and crew, your hard work has paid off!

after watching unriddle I’m really impressed by rui-en, a very good actress in fact is even better than zoe or fann when they were her age in my opinion, sorry if offended anyone. She is very good in her mandarin, her pronunciation is brilliant and her acting is very natural but what makes her so special is her coolness and her beautiful voice, no one in mediacorp sound as good as her.
Hope she has an opportunity to act in China with china actors or actresses in modern drama, she has the talent and her biggest asset is her beautiful voice, I’m sure viewers in China will be mesmerised by her voice.
I think she will be the next real ah-jie and the successor to huang bi-ren in terms of acting. Also she has the x-factor to act in movies especially action movies.

BEST EPISODE SO FAR!!!!!!!!! The twists and turns, and Rui En looks so WOW!!!!! Her scenes with Chen Li Ping were so fun and I could feel Rui En’s sadness at the end of the interrogation, there was a very subtle and intense inner emotions she seems to be trying to hide, I felt her longing for her father yet at the same time wondering about her father’s love when compared to Cui Xiu Ling’s father. It was very short and she wasn’t the focus of that scene but I could just feel it :/

To me, some copying is acceptable. Ideas are bound to be referenced. Think about what you think and how you think, everything you think comes from SOMEWHERE. It’s okay. NOTHING wrong with that, but of course no blatant infringement of others’ intellectual copyright.
I have to point out that this is where I think you missed others’ point completely, it is not about copying that is disturbing, it is about the low-standards of production, despite some efforts and promotion by the cast and crew. The script, the acting, BIG SIGH! I feel so sad for our country, and to be able to feel dissatisfied with local production is only because I really want the best for my country.
Be more composed and rational in your thinking, then I guess you will understand what I really mean.

cannot stand those ppl who r commenting bout unriddle. dunno wat in the hell is wrong wif them. when there no police shows, they say singapore shows not nice, boring, hong kong one nicer. then now that a nice and exciting show like unriddle comes out they complain that mediacorp copy hong kong shows. if that is the case why didn’t they complain about other shows? they are bound to be some similarities rite, if some things make they show even more exciting i think there is no harm copying. they say no creativity, and that they noe wat is coming out next why dont they tell us wat is coming out next. if a certain thing, or method is used before, is it that others cannot use it, if that is the case i think there be nothing to be shoot anymore. sometimes good thins are supposed to be learned and when it is being used it should not be said to be copying. in this case if someone use a i-phone then no one else can use it? coz it is an act of copying? why r these ppl so difficult to please? they say that the police in the show cannot shoot properly and that they run too slow but isn’t all these used to create a climax in the show? if the police can catch the criminals so easily, it wont be exciting anymore rite? actually there are many scenes such where police in the shows “cannot” in this case shoot properly and that they cannot catch up wif the criminals in hong kong shows but when singapore audience are watching these shows they did not say anything rite in this case WHY ARE THEY COMMENTING ON UNRIDDLE??? I THINK THEY JUST PREJUDICED TO SINGAPORE POLICE SHOWS, OR MAYB THE CAST. IN MY OPINION UNRIDDLE IS AWESOME! agree with you that the first 2 episodes weren’t as exciting as i expected it to be but it picked up pretty well at episode 3. perhaps because it’s in the beginning, the case seemed so isolated. but at episode 3, the links become more apparent and that’s when the suspense really pours in.
wtr to the rigid acting, i felt comfortable with the leads’. which part did you find uncomfortable?
yes, i also think that mdc should improve its standard but unriddle is a sign that it’s taking the right steps.

Oh, that’s interesting. I agree with you that HK standards have dropped somewhat, and it is precisely that which shows that you hold hk police drama in high regard as well. Hmm, I’m saying this not because I’m not supportive of anything local, but there really is a standard to be achieved that we can learn from HK. (as well as the US)
In fact, the most recent HK drama Beauty Knows No Pain shows HUGE improvement in scriptwriting, seriously, apart from the first episode perhaps. The rest are of serious quality, which you treasure of course. I know you used to like HK drama, and I highly recommend you to watch this to regain your interest and correct your misconception. Other dramas, which I believe will be good, include Rosy Business 2 and Gun Metal Grey (police drama).
Hmm, Mediacorp can do better. SERIOUSLY!

Have watched two episodes of the Unriddle.
Chen Li Ping is excellent! Her acting is unbelievably creative in a natural way! 不用多说什么来推销自己，她却以最精湛语最有诚意的演技说服观众，赋予一个个角色生命力。她是低调的华丽。Just like Cate Blanchett, she doesn’t have to please everyone, but she always manages to surprise us.

im a Malaysian and i dont really think S’pore’s police drama is worse than those hk dramas..well US is another standard..even hk drama is not in the same league as US..
i feel Meta is a great drama..much better than a lot of hk one..the script is interesting and refreshing..the casts are awesome too..but Crime busters X2 disappoints me.
to be honest hk dramas’ standard has dropped a lot..in terms of acting skills they are still ahead of s’pore..but not in scripts..feel like the scriptwriter is regarding us the audience as stupid..and seems to emphasize more on Quantity instead of Quality..so i stop watching hk drama now.
anyway i just share my views here..im looking forward to Unriddle now..=)

._. Caught the first 2 episodes of Unriddle … Very disappointing.
There isn’t Suspense, there isn’t Thrill, and the actors/actresses are so rigid. So is the script. And so are the ideas. After years of watching HK Police Shows, all I can say to Mediacorp Police Drama is, good luck.
You’re seriously over-rating the show, Paul, but thanks for sharing anyway.
There are way better Police Shows out there, but this drama is a start and an initiative for betterment at least.

watched the first ep yesterday, very impressed with tay ping hui, chen liping, rui-en, zheng geping & also the new guy chen bangjun not bad also.
tay ping hui is a great actor, mediacorp pls give him the recognition finally that he deserved in next year star award.
I have to agree with the EP paul yuen that liping is tailor-made for this role. Zheng geping also, this guy aged very well just like fine wine getting more and more charismatic, best supporting actor will be his next year.
rui-en has the best voice among the female actresses in mediacorp, she is very cool and was delighted that she finally appears in dress, she looks good in dress should wear more often, she is a good actress.
For the new guy bangjun, well I think this guy got potential if groomed properly who knows maybe the next geping or shaoguang.
this is a good drama by paul yuen.

you really know how to create suspense…somehow my gutfeel is that it will be a good show …hopefully, it is 100% original and not ‘copy here copy there’ to piece a story. Casts wise, lucky there isn’t any with those ‘accent’ when they speak eg Tracy Lee, Nat Ho etc….

I have decided to do a review about Unriddle for Episode 1 since no one else who went to the preview did so yet. Much apologies for the extremely lengthy one.
It is almost inevitable that we draw links between Unriddle and Metamorphosis, not just because both deals with the same genre and has Rui En starring as one of the main leads, but because Unriddle is one of the most promising dramas in recent years while Metamorphosis was itself, the Best Drama in 2007. Not to forget, we have two outstanding Executive Producers for the shows too – Paul Yuen and Yang Xibing respectively.
If you are clear that no matter how similar the two dramas are, they are still different entities ultimately, then you are well on your way to better appreciate Unriddle.
For those who paid more attention, you would know that EP YXB prefers beefing up the debut episodes for his dramas. Which explains the kick, punch, action and even the scale we saw in the first episode of Metamorphosis.
This is something very different from EP Paul’s style, who seems to prefer a more light-hearted entrance, so much so some viewers might find certain scenes as absolutely unnecessary but for those who noticed the links, you would be most amazed by the meticulousness of the story and its presentation. How they guide you step by step through each and every scene, to question them yet make you realise that the answers were already provided in the earlier scenes. And of course, you always end up wondering if there’s more than meets the eye. Talking about suspense, in its mildest but finest form, if you catch the ball.
For those who are looking for more punch and action in the debut episode, I’m afraid you would have to be as disappointed as I am. The only fighting scene was the very scene Rui En injured herself while sparring with Zheng Geping. FYI, that scene was originally not included in the script but proposed by Rui En thereafter. Her injury incurred might lead one to wonder if her suggestion was uncalled for but even as a fan who literally feels for her pain, I couldn’t imagine how episode one might turn out to be if the scene was not included. I think it would probably falls flat.
As usual, Chen Liping was adorable, Rui En was cool and Tay Pinghui was the man. But even with all these stereotyping, you can’t help but realise that their adorableness, coolness and manliness has been “re-refined”. They make you feel that there has to be more to come, from them. I personally would prefer more chemistry between Rui En and Tay Pinghui in one of the opening scenes but I do understand too that the awkwardness was necessary for the scene (details of which I won’t provide to prevent being a spoiler).
EP Paul might not have left you a gigantic piece of precious stone at the start of your path but the tiny bits and pieces of the odd-looking stones are carefully positioned to lead you to discover the cave that contains all the assorted precious stones you could possibly dream of. And this drama calls for patience from its viewers, because the best is always saved for the last.
Detractors are going to say that I am exaggerating my comment and that it is biasness at its fineness, but honestly, these people will never find my comment unbiased enough so there really isn’t any need for me to accommodate to them. Hopefully my “review” could help someone better manage their expectations and hence better enjoy Unriddle

Watching the showreel on TV is so much better!
And the new English trailer that combines the 3 teasers was great as well, my family paused and watched with curiosity when it aired. I can’t wait for Wednesday :/

8频道台湾长寿剧《爱》在本地长寿剧《想握你的手》在7月16日播出大结局高收视结束后, 接档周日播出,新传媒是原本希望收视会再创另一个高峰,但收视在评论员的意料之内下滑. 但是却出乎意料之外下滑超过一半! 著名媒体公司的数据显示前两周7点档的总收看人数,只有450000左右, 比《想握你的手》的平均950000还不到一半!
U频道的长寿韩剧《欧巴桑, 向前冲!》的收视, 一向来比8频道的《想握你的手》少, 却在最后8集在《想握你的手》播完后收视突飞猛进,数据显示比在同时播出《想握你的手》时增加了20% 左右, 显然吸引了许多原本收看《想握你的手》的观众收看, 显示本地观众已经对这部台湾电视剧的唾弃.
这不免让人想起,新传媒是否又失策了? 这个答案是无可否认的.起初在六月分宣布这个消息导致许多观众,尤其是年轻人不利的回响. 但是新传媒却并没有及时做出调整, 这个义无反顾的决定, 显然导致许多观众, 甚至是新传媒艺人的不满!
有新传媒艺人透露, 原本艺人们去马来西亚拍戏也是希望他们所拍摄的电视剧, 可以在黄金时段播出, 但今年的合拍电视剧《谈谈情, 舞舞狮》, 《家在半山芭》, 《有你终身美丽》都在下午播出, 导致许多上班上学的观众无法欣赏他们精湛的演出. 难免让拍摄辛苦的艺人们感觉失望! 现在《爱》变本加厉霸占了整个7点档, 剥夺这些优质电视剧可以在黄金时段播出的机会, 让艺人们对新传媒的这些决定感到反感, 这也可能是最近这么多艺人想离开新传媒的原因之一.
著名电视评论员许哲义说到, “这个不满情绪的演变原本是可以避免的, 事情的急转直下显然是新传媒之前没有先前预料到的, 现在《爱》已经让太多人感到不满, 新传媒若不作出及时的回应拯救观众与艺人的信心, 譬如改回只在周末播出而不在周日播出,后果将不堪设想!”
为了确认上述收视数据的可靠性,本报记者在星期三晚上的7点左右走访碧山组屋区做了个小试验,访问了100户在家的华籍家庭, 看看他们是否在收看电视, 而在收看什么节目, 结果只有21户人家在收看《爱》, 而多数在收看《爱》的人士都是超过45岁的国人,而年轻人不是躲在房里上网,就是在吃晚饭. 收看《欧巴桑, 向前冲!》的有33户, 收看5频道播出的《2010全国科学挑战赛》(National Science Challenge 2010) 的甚至有28户, 其他的家族多数并没有扭开电视机. 这显示《爱》并没有新传媒表示的那么受欢迎!
最近有些观众指出,《爱》的一些情节也有涉嫌抄袭美国跨别超过40多年的电视剧《每日亲子情》(Days of Our Lives) 以及《引导之光》(Guiding Light), 尤其是关于家庭斗争的部分, 真让人想到本地电视剧也有抄袭嫌疑, 其实连台湾的电视剧也不仅如此! 而台湾电视剧为何那么多题材而可以拍摄到那么垄长, 可想而之!
看来新传媒往后必定要听取民意, 才来作出这些较争议性的决定!

The 1st ep is really gd! I’m like glued to the show! I know ppl will say tts bcos i’m a fan of someone who is in the show… But its really gd! Almost everyone in e show did pretty well in the 1st ep and u can totally feel e tensed feelin… Its gd and now i cant wait for 2nd ep! But of cos i’ll still watch e debut on 4th Aug!
And i muz say! Joshua is really gd! I hope he’s swansong drama will wow more people! =)

So when did you last press the fast forward button when previewing local drama? Does it mean you find other local drama boring?
And obviously you will have the perception that Unriddle is ‘good’. Afterall, what I have been watching on tv on Channel 8 has been so boring and dull, and a slight improvement will have you saying that WAH RIDDLE is so great! it’s so great i din forward it!

Just an advice Paul, you shouldn’t do too much on Unriddle. Otherwise fans of other artistes may go on a strike and it isn’t beneficial to anyone. I’m looking forward to Unriddle though.

i am really looking forward to unriddle, because this is the show that showcast all the very good artistes & plot looks good. Li ping’s role reminds me of those days where she is very sporty & cool, unlike those aunty roles she play recently. Recent shows seem to very ‘budget’ and didn’t put in as much effort as Unriddle. The trailers for this show is also great.
Now that No Limits is coming to an end, i would like to share my thoughts. This show showcast many pretty & handsome idols. Felicia & Yuan Shuai worked very hard for their roles. Elvin & Tracy are very good-looking but problem is with their articulation of chinese. DYT looks tired, and wanting to look cool. The experienced supporting artistes did not disappoint, but the newbies are not so natural. Overall plot is not strong and abit backdated.
I would like to say that the filming ie background colors of No Limit is very good (don’t really know how to explain, hope you know what i meant and feedback to the correct team..) And i think the theme song really brings up the mood of the show. (otherwise show would appear even more boring) Really inspiring & “bright” feeling. Thanks to the team!

A movie with a rushed script, filmed on tight schedule & asked her to pose topless (still play trick like don’t tell you really got topless or not, LOL). What’s even more hilarious is, this movie is filmed by gahment body (Health Promotion Board), so needless to say, her fee is very low & is considered to be a movie for health campaign.
So this is the type of movie that our queen is waiting for 10 yrs. So hilarious can.
And joining this frenzy are a hair guru & a fengshui guru, lagi hilarious can. Our hair guru wants to bring FC & JP to venture into China. Our fengshui guru tells us our artistes must socialise in order to be movie stars. And just invest a few thousands of $, our fengshui guru is entitled the right to tell us who can be a movie star, LOL. Don’t know whether he got read these people 8-characters or not, or he just copy-cat other people opinions leh.
But finally, RE may really have a movie offer, from the fengshui guru, no less, LOL. So then she must socialise is it, according to the fengshui guru leh, wahaha. But too bad, she wants to win an Oscar (her secret wish), so she can recognised as an actress with Hollywood standard of acting, not those Ch 8 acting, LOL

aiya, those who go to the event are the cast’s fans, naturally they will write very good reviews. You can never know what are the truths from these crazy fans, esp those of RE.
Paul, you are very smart, before the show starts, you praise all the artistes first, or else when the complaints start pouring, you have no chance to praise any more.
RE is not blessed lah. Oh ya ya, she is blessed, blessed to have a top man in mediacorp who is her guarding angel, ya, she is so blessed.
Just hope she won’t turn around & say she has no friends in mediacorp, she forgot she got Paul (her good friend) & 1 top man (her goodest friend) at mediacorp. I hope next time she remember to add Yvvone, Andie, CLP as her friends too.

you really know how to create suspense…somehow my gutfeel is that it will be a good show …hopefully, it is 100% original and not ‘copy here copy there’ to piece a story. Casts wise, lucky there isn’t any with those ‘accent’ when they speak eg Tracy Lee, Nat Ho etc….

泳闯琴关 has a few shining gems. Yes, it has a simple storyline but I like to watch actings that were done well such as the moments with Felicia’s coming to terms with her mother were touching and very heart-felt. ‘Add oil’ to local dramas. PUSH ‘Ai’ out of 7pm slots. Sure ‘Hands’ may not suit the tastes of everyone (surely not those myopic loudspeakers who dialed 1-800 to ZxBx) but it will certainly help build a better future long-life drama series. Don’t be let down by negativity. There are many more local viewers who support local productions than those so-called drama-critics who were so anti-locals.
We WILL be tuning in to unriddle.
